The church I grew up attending received three offerings every Sunday; Sunday school class offering, world missions offering (we called it “the penny march”), and the tithe offering during worship service. Every Sunday, without fail, mom and dad made sure that all four of us kids had a dime or a quarter to give in at least two of those offerings. Some Sundays those dimes and quarters had to be scavenged from the deep, mysterious places in mom’s pocketbook or from underneath sofa cushions and car seats, but by the time we made it to church, we had something in our pocket to give. I absolutely loved giving to the church then, and I love it now.
Here Are Six Reasons Why I Give To The Church:
#1 I Want God To Be First In My Life.
The truth is, if He’s not first in every area of my life, including my finances, He’s not first at all. It is a spiritual impossibility to be a totally devoted follower of Christ without being completely surrendered in my finances (Matthew 6:24).

#2 I Value The Church Jesus Died For
The church is the body of Jesus Christ and it ought to be highly valued by His followers. I have been part of the church my entire life, and it has shaped me to become who I am today. I was saved in the church, baptized in the church, discipled in the church, called to ministry in the church, met my wife in the church, married her in the church, and now I’m shepherding a growing, passionate for Jesus local church (Trinity Worship Center). I am so glad to give back to what has been such a pivotal force in my life. And let’s be honest, we all have no problem spending money on the things we value, so shouldn’t we be willing to give generously and sacrificially to the church Jesus gave up everything for?
#3 When I Give To The Church, I’m Giving To God
When I give to the church, I’m giving to God, and He has been very good to me. Everything I have is a gift from God (Psalm 24:1), and giving to the church is an opportunity for me to express gratitude for what He has done for me, and to bring back to Him what is His anyway.
#4 Giving To The Church Counters My Selfish Tendencies
I am naturally selfish, as we all are. I enjoy things, and my tendency is to want more stuff than I really need. Giving to the church helps me resist greed and selfishness because every dollar I give is a dollar I don’t spend on me. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus said your heart will follow your treasure, so every time I give to the church my heart falls a little more in love with the people, the mission, and the Lord of the church. And, my heart falls a little more out of love with the temporary stuff of this world.
#5 God Blesses Me When I Give To The Church
God’s promise in Malachi 3:10-12 is that when we bring the tithe (10% of what we earn or are given) to the storehouse ( the local house of God), heaven opens up and God pours more blessing into our lives than we can contain. Debbie and I have been tithing throughout our thirty-two years of marriage, and we both tithed before we were married. So many times God has provided for us financially, and He has blessed our lives in countless other ways as well. We are living proof that you can never out give God!
#6 There Is No Better Investment On Planet Earth Than The Church
No other organization has been operating continuously for 2,000 years, and no other organization will continue to exist throughout eternity. Other organizations are doing good work, but there simply is not any organization with more potential to change the world than the church of Jesus Christ. The church is where lost people are saved, hopeless people find hope, addicted people are set free, broken people are restored, hungry people are fed, and rejected people are accepted. The most beautiful thing about what happens in the church is that God gets glory for it all, because the church is His.
These are my reasons for loving to give to the church. You may have other reasons, in fact, I encourage you to spend a few minutes developing your own list. If you are not giving to the church, think about why you are not, and consider how God may want you to change your perspective and begin to invest in the body of Jesus. I can tell you from experience, you’ll be glad you did!
